A closer look at 10 arrested Saudi women's rights activists

May 23, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia's arrest of 10 women's rights advocates just weeks before the kingdom is set to lift the world's only ban on women driving is seen as the culmination of a steady crackdown on anyone perceived as a potential critic of the government. The group includes women ranging in age from their 20s to their 70s who have pushed to lift the ban on women driving and for equal rights, as well as men who have supported them. State-linked media and rights advocates have circulated the names of those detained. Here's a look at who...

Arrested Saudi activists held incommunicado since last week

May 23, 2018

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia is holding and interrogating at least 10 women's rights activists — seven women and three men — without any access to lawyers, according to people familiar with the arrests. The detentions are seen as a culmination of a steady crackdown on perceived critics of the government. People familiar with the arrests say the activists were allowed just one phone call to worried relatives a week ago, and that one of the women has been held entirely incommunicado. They spoke to The Associated Press late on Monday on condition of anonymity for fear of...

In Salah's Nile delta village, the Egyptian is a super hero

May 23, 2018

NAGRIG, Egypt — The cafe began to fill up more than two hours before kickoff. By the time the match began, some 200 men and boys — some as young as five — huddled around two large TV screens at a cafe Mohamed Salah frequents when he's back visiting his village deep in Egypt's Nile Delta. Salah didn't score, but almost everyone at the cafe let out a joyous scream and clapped enthusiastically at the final whistle: Liverpool, the English club for which Salah has scored more than 40 goals since he joined this season, has reached the final of...

Sri Lanka marks end to civil war as a divided nation

May 23, 2018

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka commemorated the ninth anniversary of the end of its civil war as a divided nation, with minority Tamils calling for an international investigation into alleged wartime atrocities and the government defending soldiers from allegations. President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday presided over a war memorial ceremony in the capital, Colombo. He said even though some accuse the military of war crimes, such allegations haven't been formally levied by world bodies such as the U.N. Human Rights Council. The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in a 2015 report said if allegations against...

Iran signs oil deal with UK group as France's Total exits

May 23, 2018

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian state TV is reporting that the country has signed an agreement with a British consortium to develop an oil field, just as another major company, France's Total, says it will withdraw from Iran because of renewed U.S. sanctions. The new agreement is the first between Iran and a company from a key Western ally of the United States since Washington last week announced it will pull out of the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. The U.S. said it would reinstate sanctions that were lifted under the deal, which would potentially bar European...
